1) Shut Off Your HVAC System Conditioner

Make sure your air conditioner or heater is off and won’t turn on while you’re working. If you’re worried, you can locate the power switch and flip it completely off or turn the HVAC breaker off.

2) Find Your Filter

You must peek inside your HVAC system to find the filter. Consult the owner’s manual for your system. On the panel that holds the filter, many will have “Filter” or something like inscribed on it. You might need to use a screwdriver to remove this panel in order to examine the filter.

3) Purchase the Best Filter for Your System

On the side of the previous one, the filter’s size should be printed. This has to be noted for future use, possibly in permanent marker on the side of the HVAC unit. If all the other dimensions are the same and your unit can handle it, you might be able to choose a thicker filter. This may offer greater filtering for small particles like bacteria and allergens.

4) Replace the Filter

The majority of filters have a side that needs to be facing the airflow. Leaving the old filter in place until you are replacing it is the simplest way to make sure you do this correctly. After that, place the new one exactly where the old one was.

5) Turn Your HVAC System On Again

Reset the breaker or switch, or turn on your air conditioner’s thermostat. Your air should be cleaner than before and you should also see a decrease in your energy use if your filter was really dirty!

When to Replace Your Air Filter

Generally speaking, we advise changing your filter every 1-3 months, depending on a few factors. After evaluating your HVAC unit and talking with you about how frequently you use it, our Orange Park HVAC specialists can give you a more accurate estimate. Change your filter at least once every six months, even if you only occasionally use it. It’s important to have HVAC maintenance performed on a regular basis, in order to make sure your HVAC unit is operating as efficiently as possible.
